Aquaculture is the farming, breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments including ponds, rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Aquaculture produces all sorts of fish, shellfish, and seaweeds including food fish, sport fish, bait fish, ornamental fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae, sea vegetables, and fish eggs. Aquaculture also includes the production of fish and shellfish released into the wild to rebuild wild populations.

Mission :

The mission is to strengthen livelihoods and enhance food and nutrition security by improving fisheries and aquaculture. We pursue this through research partnerships focused on helping those who stand to benefit the most—poor producers and consumers, women and children.

Vision :

The Aquaculture Policy Framework describes in broad terms how we are realizing this vision by working with the provinces, territories, Indigenous peoples, the aquaculture industry, and individual Canadians. In particular, the Department is collaborating with these partners to increase public confidence in the sustainability of aquaculture development and create the conditions necessary to enable the responsible growth of this important industry while ensuring sustainable aquatic ecosystems for the future. The Department works closely with other federal agencies, provinces and territories to ensure the appropriate regulation of the aquaculture sector.
